The University of Virginia Writing Center
[edit] Who We Are & What We Do
The Writing Center is part of the UVA Writing Program. We primarily work with student essays, but can also help with proposals and personal statements. We can help with academic papers from any discipline: humanities, social sciences, sciences, and architecture. We focus on the organization and structure of writing (we do not proofread), and also provide ESL support. Under the UVa honor code, students may work with tutors on academic essays assigned in class, but they must receive explicit permission from the instructor to work on exam questions. The Writing Center follows the principles of writing and argumentation as described in The Craft of Argument.
The Writing Center works closely with the ENWR (English Writing) courses at the University of Virginia, which teach the same principles of argument to all UVA students. We work particularly closely with ENWR 1505 and 1506 students, who maintain standing appointments with Writing Center tutors throughout the semester. See the Writing Center Info page for more.

The Writing Center in the School of Engineering and Applied Science is aimed at helping students in all years of STS classes with their papers. Tutors meet with students in the second-floor conference room in Thornton Hall, A226; appointments begin on the hour and last for 50 minutes.
We're happy to help with writing at any stage, from initial conceptualization to polishing a final draft. We guide students toward improving the structure, clarity, and style of their papers; we are not a proofreading service.
In the Fall 2009 semester, tutors are available beginning February 2nd on Mondays 2-6pm, Tuesdays 3-6pm, and Wednesdays 3-6pm. To make an appointment, visit our online schedule, create an account, and then log into the "Fall 2009-STS" schedule.
