At first Greenpeace resisted the participation of members of the Reddit community who didn’t seem to share a seriousness about Greenpeace’s goal of preventing Japanese whaling. However, when Greenpeace realized that Reddit voters could still contribute to their cause through a shared principle—that large numbers of people can make a difference when they work together—they were able to achieve their goal.
